Global Education in Ireland: Critical Histories and Future Directions – Edited by Eilish Dillon, Niamh Gaynor, Gerard McCann and Stephen McCloskey

We are delighted to be involved in a new book, ‘Global Education in Ireland: Critical Histories and Future Directions’ launched today. This open access book, edited by Eilish Dillon, Niamh Gaynor, Gerard McCann and Stephen McCloskey, brings together leading global education (GE) practitioners and academics to, for the first time, provide a history of GE in Ireland. It critically examines GE policy and practice in Ireland, exploring philosophical, pedagogical, and policy influences, as well as topics such as global citizenship, activism, solidarity, and critical pedagogy. With case studies and thematic chapters, the book offers valuable insights for GE practitioners in Ireland and internationally, advocating for a radical and decolonial approach to global education.

Comhlámh Contributions

Featured in the book is a chapter written by our CEO titled, ‘Solidarity Activism and GCE – Two Sides of the Same Coin’. The chapter explores the intricate relationship between solidarity activism and GE in Ireland and examines how historical legacies and depoliticisation have influenced public engagement. The chapter highlights the potential for GE to drive transformative social change.

In a chapter section on ‘Case Studies’, Eilish Dillon explores creative and decolonial approaches to GE in Ireland through two case studies, one of which examines Comhlámh’s depth education approach, emphasising critical reflection and decolonial pedagogies. Special thanks to our colleagues, Sive Bresnihan and Julia Haimlinger, for their insightful contributions to this section.
