International travel can make a significant contribution to young people’s learning, supporting a deeper understand of global issues, building meaningful connections across cultures and nurturing active global citizenship. Meaningful experience with communities in the Global South require careful planning, with a responsibility on schools to ensure that travel is safe, respectful, and beneficial for everyone involved. Good intentions alone do not guarantee positive outcomes. Schools should take time to consider how a proposed trip, partnership, or programme may affect both students and host communities.

Join us for this lunchtime webinar to learn more about the resource that has been developed to support schools through this process. Further information on speakers to follow. The session will explore many of the ethical concerns associated with student travel to the Global South, including the negative impact of visits to orphanages and other residential care facilities for children. We particularly encourage attendance by school leaders, members of boards of management, teachers, and trip organisers.

This webinar is being hosted by the Comhlámh End Orphanage Volunteering Working Group, who are working to end the practice of orphanage visits and volunteering, and to support the global care reform movement.

Comhlámh is grateful to Irish Aid at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) for ongoing funding support for our work. Irish Aid also supports global citizenship education in Ireland to encourage learning and public engagement with global issues”.
