It was a pleasure to have to brief conversations with both Anabel and Joby and looking forward to hearing much more at the event. Full details below:
” Last week the European Parliament voted against a motion supporting search and rescue in the Mediterranean. Since 2014, 18,898 deaths were registered in the Mediterranean alone. It continues to be the most dangerous crossing in the world. It is very likely that countless other, unrecorded lives have been lost.
In addition, Ireland’s Navy has played a proud role in the Mediterranean, rescuing more than 18,000 people over several missions, but it has not returned since 2018. Operation Sophia, the EU’s military operation in the Mediterranean, now uses aerial surveillance only and increasingly relies on the Libyan coastguard resulting in people being returned to Libya and subjected to human rights abuses.
On Friday 8th, the Irish Refugee and Migrant Coalition and Trinity College’s MPhil in Race, Ethnicity, Conflict will bring together crews from NGO search and rescue boats to discuss their work. Representatives of MSF Ireland, Refugee Rescue, Sea-Watch, MASI – Movement of Asylum Seekers Ireland and Open Arms will be in attendance. Campaigner and Educator Caoimhe Butterly will chair the discussion.
