As the Irish Association of Development Workers and Volunteers, Comhlámh recognises the significant role that international aid plays in supporting communities worldwide. The future direction of U.S. development cooperation, particularly in light of recent discussions around USAID, raises serious concerns about the potential of a humanitarian catastrophe.
At a time when global humanitarian needs are growing, it is essential that international development remains focused on principles of justice and human rights, with programmes that are locally led. We believe that development cooperation should not be used as a tool of political leverage but should instead prioritise solidarity and recognise the interdependence of people and the planet.
In this context, we encourage our members and partners to engage with the Restore Humanity campaign led by the Irish Global Health Network and partners. The campaign calls for a renewed commitment to humanitarian principles, ensuring that international aid is delivered with integrity and in support of those who need it most.
