Fracking, Neocolonialism and International Resistance
Fracking gas has been banned in Ireland. So
why is the government driving through plans to build a fracked gas refinery
plant in Shannon? What does this mean for
communities still fighting to defeat fracking in their communities and country? And what does that international resistance
look like?
These are the themes our panel will take up in our final #FirstWeds of the year.
We are delighted to have. Anne Marie Harrington from Futureproof Clare and
Esteban Servat, founder of Ecoleaks.
Anne Marie Harrington
Futureproof Clare
Anne Marie Harrington moved to Clare six years ago, experienced the fury of Atlantic storms, read Naomi Klein’s ‘This Changes Everything’ and was compelled to become an environmental activist. She brings a wealth of experience and insight from other worlds, as for the past 17 years, she has worked as an advertising and branding copywriter with every size and shape of brand. However, she considers the story of Shannon LNG, a proposed terminal to import fracked gas from the US, to be one of the most fascinating she has ever told. A founding member of Futureproof Clare, Anne Marie sees Shannon LNG as an opportunity to make a difference on the world stage, while armed with a phone in rural Co Clare.
Esteban Servat
Ecoleaks
Esteban Servat helped spark the global anti-fracking movement after he published a secret Government document that showed that the fracking industry in his home country of Argentina was contaminating water. He recently fled Argentina for Europe due to political persecution and death threats. Esteban will join us via Zoom.
