We want to take a moment to honour the remarkable contributions of Áine Costigan to Comhlámh and the wider development sector. Áine exemplified the values of solidarity, compassion, and active citizenship that lie at the heart of global justice work.

Within Comhlámh, Áine was a passionate advocate for women’s rights, playing an active role in the Women’s Issues Group launch. This initiative was a trailblazer in highlighting the invisible labour of women, particularly in the Global South, and in advocating for equality in areas such as pay, education, and recognition of their contributions. Áine’s work in raising awareness of women’s double oppression—both in traditional and colonial contexts—was instrumental in shaping Comhlámh’s approach to solidarity activism.

Áine’s passing deeply saddens the Comhlámh community, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.

Áine’s unwavering dedication to social justice, equality, and human dignity leaves a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire us all.

Please read the below piece by Áine, written for Comhlámh in 1982, where she reflects on the founding of the Women’s Issues Group and the urgent need to advocate for women’s rights in both the Global North and South. Her words remain as powerful and relevant today as they were then.
