‘Comhlámh and Afri are asking all civil society organisations to sign up to this urgent open letter to TDs and Senators calling on Ireland to join the Hague Group to end complicity in the genocide of the Palestinian People.

The Hague Group countries have pledged to immediately implement six measures through their own legal and administrative systems to end complicity in Israel’s campaign of devastation in Palestine. They have set 20 September, alongside the 80th UN General Assembly, as the deadline for other states to join them. We must ensure that Ireland does so.

Open Letter from Irish Civil Society to All TDs and Senators

Dear Representative,

The nightmare in Gaza continues to escalate. In the West Bank, Palestinians face daily settler violence, land dispossession, home demolitions, and forcible displacement. Across Ireland, people are united in horror and outrage.

Measures to halt this genocide have been repeatedly blocked at the UN. In response to the distress and frustration of people across the world, the Hague Group of countries led by South Africa and Colombia, have come together to demand an end to this criminal cruelty. Like these nations, Ireland understands the power of international solidarity. As a country that has endured colonisation, partition, and deliberate starvation, Ireland bears a particular moral and historical responsibility to stand with peoples facing occupation and extermination.

The atrocities being inflicted on the Palestinian people go beyond what imagination can grasp. Ireland must not fail to join the Hague Group in ending complicity in this genocide and prosecuting those responsible. We welcome the Government’s attendance at the Hague Group summit, but now attendance must be matched by action.

Ireland has until 20 September to join the 13 countries that have already committed to six concrete pledges at the Hague Group summit:

  • End arms transfers – Prevent the provision or transfer of arms, munitions, military fuel, related military equipment, and dual-use items to Israel.
  • Stop military transit – Prevent the transit, docking, and servicing of vessels where there is a clear risk that they are carrying military goods to Israel.
  • Enforce shipping controls – Deny carriage of such items by ships under national flags, and impose penalties, including de-flagging, for non-compliance.
  • Cut state support for occupation – Review all public contracts to ensure that state funds and institutions are not supporting Israel’s illegal occupation.
  • Pursue justice – Pursue national or international investigations and prosecutions for serious international crimes.
  • Enable domestic prosecutions – Support the use of international jurisdiction in domestic legal systems to enable prosecutions for crimes committed in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

    We, the undersigned, urge every TD and Senator to:

  • Publicly declare support for Ireland’s membership of the Hague Group;
  • Advocate within your party and in Government for Ireland to sign the six pledges;
  • Ensure that Ireland formally joins the Hague Group before the 20 September deadline.

This is a decisive moment for Ireland to stand firmly on the side of justice, international law, and humanity.
