Biography
Brighter Communities Worldwide (BCW) is a charity with a wealth of experience building sustainable communities in East Africa. Founded as Friends of Londiani in 2002, our model creates an enabling environment for communities to realise change.
Our vision is a world where strong, healthy communities can thrive, building sustainable livelihoods and brighter futures for all.
Our mission is to work in partnership with communities, to deliver programmes that enrich their lives and help create better futures for them and their families.
Intro
Harambee is a swahili word which means ‘working together’ and this is what volunteering with BCW is all about. Most years, there are two Harambee’s from Ireland – one in July/August and another in October/November. Harambee provides a short-term volunteer placement opportunity for 2 or 3 weeks in Kenya along with a training programme around it to enhance the experience and help prepare you for it. Not enough time to change the world but enough time to change your way of looking at it. This is a chance to use your skills to help make changes to peoples lives and to explore hands on for yourself an understanding of global development issues. It is also an opportunity to learn new skills

For over 200 years, CMSI has helped to send and support people from Ireland to work alongside the global Church. While the context of global mission and the approach taken may have changed, we still see huge value in sending and receiving people.
We continue to provide opportunities for individuals to visit and serve our Global Partners. We also work with churches in Ireland to facilitate and host visits by our partners.

Development Perspectives mission is “to tackle poverty, inequality and climate change through transformative education and active global citizenship”
Development Perspectives recognises the importance of learning from different local and global perspectives. Acknowledging the value that emotional impact has on meaningful learning, experiential learning plays an important role in all our programmes. The SDG Advocate Training is an 8 month Development Education journey designed for people not only to learn more about poverty, inequality and climate change but to act and challenge some of the complex development issues that face local and global communities. This annual programme is still one of the core elements of our work and shorter projects are designed based on its template. We recruit volunteers to give 3 months to live as human rights monitors (we call them Ecumenical Accompaniers) in the West Bank. Volunteers are given full preparation and training and commit to doing advocacy work on their return, in the belief that ordinary people can influence policy and bring about positive change. We seek an end to the occupation of the occupied Palestinian territories and a just peace based on international law. We work with both Palestinians and Israelis to bring this about.

Healing children’s smiles. Making the world a better place.
At Operation Smile Ireland, we measure ourselves by the joy we see on children’s faces. We’re more than a charity. More than an NGO. We’re a mobilised force of medical professionals and caring hearts who provide safe, effective reconstructive surgery for children born with facial deformities such as cleft lip and cleft palate.
Every three minutes, a child is born with a cleft — often unable to eat, speak, socialise or smile. In some places these children are shunned and rejected. And in too many cases, their parents can’t afford to give them the surgeries they need to live a normal life.
That’s where we come in. Since 1982, Operation Smile— through the help of dedicated medical volunteers — has provided free surgeries to children in more than 50 countries, healing their smiles and bringing hope for a better future.
Thanks to the generosity and spirit of volunteerism shown by our supporters, we heal thousands of children per year and, today, more than 200,000 girls and boys have a chance at a new life because of our work.

SERVE’s volunteers play a very important role in building the capacity of our local partners to sustain and improve the services they offer. Our volunteers work with the local community to encourage dialogue. By sharing and working together the SERVE volunteers and the local communities learn from each other. Safety is our priority and we go to every effort to ensure the safety of our volunteers. The programme will be led by experienced Leaders, who accompany the group throughout the placement, and provide supervision and support. Health, Safety and Security is covered extensively during the pre-departure training.
SERVE also offers other tailored Programmes for groups and schools:
1) Solidarity Programme: Tailored short-term overseas solidarity programmes for young adults, communities or parishes. This programme includes; publicising the project, information evenings, recruitment and selection, pre-departure training, post-project evaluation, establishment of local services and local Solidarity Group.
2) School Immersion Programme: Tailored short-term overseas school immersion programmes for school groups to encourage students to be active global citizens. UCD Volunteers Overseas has been established to offer students the opportunity to engage in voluntary work in the developing world. We believe in the need to listen to the wisdom of local knowledge and learn from the expertise of local people in all the community projects where we work. We fundraise to support these projects financially on a once off and continuing basis. Those funds are directed according to need to projects identified by local groups, which will most benefit the community. Central to the work of the charity is the belief that students benefit greatly by volunteering their time and energy in these projects. The challenge for students and local people is to learn a mutual respect and understanding of each other’s cultural identities maintaining the hope that we can alleviate some of the causes of disadvantage
